Beautiful hand-held candle depicting Medusa

Medusa from Greek mythology is famous for her appearance - a woman with snake-like hair and the ability to petrify those who see her. She was one of the three Gorgons and was once a beautiful woman who was transformed into this horrific state by the goddess Athena as a punishment for having an affair with Poseidon in Athena's temple. Medusa was then defeated by the hero Perseus, who used a mirror and/or shield to avoid looking her in the eye, whereupon he managed to cut off her head. From her blood were born flying horses and other creatures.

Medusa's head became a powerful symbol used to ward off evil in many mythologies and cultures.
